Three boys travelled to Catterick Golf Club in North Yorkshire on Friday 8 April to represent the South of Scotland Juniors in the Northern Counties U16/U15/U14 Select against their counterparts from Yorkshire, one of England’s strongest Counties. Catterick Golf Club is a picturesque tree lined course set in the centre of Catterick Garrison and proved a stern test for all the boys.
In the morning foursomes Cameron Gray (Kirkcudbright) and Finlay Copeland (D&G) combined well to win by 1 hole after a superb 3 wood by Cameron to the centre of the last green while Callum McMillan (Kirkcudbright) unfortunately did not gel with his partner and lost by 8 and 6.
In the afternoon singles Finlay played very well and had a titanic struggle but showed his fighting spirit to win by 3 and 1, and although Cameron also played well he lost 6 and 4. His exertions earlier in the week in the Scottish Boys at Murcar must have taken their toll. Callum battled hard to be three up at the turn and as tiredness took over towards the end of a very hilly course he held on to win 3 and 1. The match result was Yorkshire 13 games, NCF Select 5
All the South boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the long journey home was spent in silence as they slept after their exertions of the day.
