The South team, bolstered by the return of Greig Marchbank (Thornhill), travelled to Torwoodlee Golf Club to play their first match of the season against Borders on Sunday 2 April. The course was very wet underfoot after heavy rain and only the singles matches were played with plugged and muddy balls being the order of the day.
This is always a very friendly start to the season with the annual match being played in the best of spirits among old adversaries.
The team captain had to re-arrange his playing order when one car load got lost in the hills and country roads and arrived forty minutes late. Even so the games were very closely fought with nine of the matches going to the seventeenth green or beyond. South won two and were unlucky to lose three of the others and halve two more. If even some of these games had gone the other way South could have travelled home with a good win under their belts. For the record Borders beat South by 6 games to 4.
