A good entry of 46 players entered the South of Scotland Senior Championship at Powfoot Golf Club on Wednesday 3 August 2016. The course was in immaculate condition and stood up well to the horrendous weather conditions of heavy rain and strong blustery winds. Only 28 players braved the elements and 14 of those returned a score.
Robin Shaw (Wigtownshire County) had only two bogeys and one double bogey in his outward nine of 40 against the par of 36. On the back nine his only blemish was at the 11th in his score of 42, seven over par, and a total of 82. Last to finish, Neil Stott (Southerness), also posted an 82 with halves of 41 and 41. He played very steadily with pars and bogeys but no disasters. He only had 4’s and 5’s on his card and one 6 at the par 5 second.
This resulted in a tie for the Championship and the necessity of a 3 hole play-off. One shot down standing on the eighteenth tee, Neil hit a magnificent second shot to eight feet and holed the birdie putt to tie with Robin after the 3 stipulated holes. Off they went again with sudden death to determine the winner. They halved their fourth and fifth holes and again stood on the eighteenth tee. Both second shots found the green, each about 45 feet from the hole. Robin went first and holed his monster for a birdie but unfortunately Neil’s brave putt just slipped past and Robin was the South of Scotland Senior Champion for 2016,
In third place was Kenny Clark (D&C) with a first nine of 41 and a second nine of 42 for a total of 83.
The CSS was 74 – Reduction of handicap only.
