SOUTH JUNIOR MATCHPLAY

Again in brilliant weather conditions the four semi-finalists teed off at Colvend Golf Club on Friday 19 July to determine who had the stamina to overcome the heat and the skill to become the champion for 2013.

The first semi-final between Iain Rae (Dalbeattie) and Andrew Kennedy (D&G) was a closely fought affair. After 14 holes Iain was 2 up but Andrew fought back to be all square after 18. Up the hill at the 19th they went where Andrew emerged victorious. The second semi-final between Angus Bendall (Southerness) and Conor Harkness (D&G) saw Conor, with his extra length off the tee, control the match eventually winning by 3 and 2. Angus played well and never gave in but Conor made few mistakes and even Angus’s renowned fighting spirit was to no avail. At 14 years old his time will surely come.

In the final Andrew took an early lead of 2 up after 4 holes but Conor eventually found his rhythm and fought back with 3 birdies to win by 4 and 3. Andrew is only 15 years old and showed great promise. Hopefully The South has found three stars of the future.
