The first competition of 2014 for the Shamash Trophy attracted 51 competitors and took place at a cool and windy Powfoot Golf Club on Sunday 20 April. The course was in superb condition for so early in the season but the breezy conditions played havoc with a number of scores. In the morning Craig Hill (D&G) returned a very creditable one under par round of 70, followed by Robert Hughan (Newton Stewart) and David Brodie (Wigtown & Bladnoch) with level par 71’s. Next were Andy Kerr (Crichton) with a 72 and John Longcake (Silloth) with 73. Scoring improved slightly in the afternoon as the wind strengthened with a fine 70 from Ben Irving (D&C), followed by 71’s from Geoff Nixon (Brampton) and M Grunwell (Powfoot) and a 72 from Iain Thomson (Powfoot). David Brodie (Wigtown & Bladnoch) returned a 73 and Craig Hill (D&G) a 74 to tie on 144 resulting in a play-off over 3 holes to determine a winner of this old and prestigious trophy. Craig beat David by one stroke to win the Shamash Trophy for the first time. The CSS for both rounds was 72.
