The results from the Douglas Maxwell Memorial Trophy on 2 September have again opened up the race for the Order of Merit 2018. David Brodie (Newton Stewart) had a run-away victory by 7 shots after a marvellous second round of 64 to win the trophy and gain maximum points. This put him in a clear second place behind Douglas Borland (Southerness), who could only finish eighth, and make the Order of Merit a two horse race between them again with two counting events to come.
Michael Grunwell (D&G), who finished second on Sunday, is coming with a late rush but looks too far behind to affect the leaders. This is a very valiant effort after having to miss some early events.
It was encouraging to see in the competition on Sunday that Kirkcudbright Golf Club has a number of youngsters who finished well up the leaderboard. This augers well for the future but they need to play more often in competitions on other courses to feature in the Order of Merit.
