On Wednesday 10 April 3 boys from the South of Scotland played for the Northern Counties Select U16’s against Yorkshire U16’s at Saltburn on a cold, bright and windless day. Duncan McNeill (Powfoot) captained the combined team and played in the first couple in the foursomes with Alex Chalk (D&G). They won a hard fought battle on the last green when the Yorkshire boys missed a 3 foot putt. Matthew McCulloch (Portpatrick) partnered Harry Clelland (Durham) and won 5 and 3 with ease, both playing and combining well. The six foursomes were halved 3 matches all.
Duncan McNeill led off the Northern Counties team in the afternoon singles and continued his good form by comfortably beating the Yorkshire captain by 3 and 2. Alex Chalk, although not playing his best golf, fought hard and took his opponent to the 17th green before losing by 2 and 1. Using all the experience gained by playing for the Scottish U16 team in the recent quadrangular tournament in Wales young Matthew McCulloch won on the last green after a titanic struggle. The match ended all square at 9 matches all.
All three boys enjoyed the experience, were a credit to South of Scotland golf and now look forward with confidence to the Northern Counties League in the summer
