Nathan Watson, (Kirkcudbright) and Iain Rae (Dalbeattie) at university in Edinburgh and Angus Bendall (Castle Douglas) at college in Gloucester returned home to enjoy their last event as South juniors in the Junior Jamboree at Southerness on Friday 27 October. They had all represented South Juniors for the last 5 years, firstly as young naïve nervous youngsters, and latterly as fine upstanding young adults with a love and aptitude for the game of golf.
Eighteen boys and one girl came to Southerness for a day of fun to compete on a course in immaculate condition on a beautiful autumnal day with cloudless skies and no wind.
The lone girl, Ellie Harkness (Lochmaben), had a very respectful score of 73 (91 – 18) with five pars and one birdie and won the girls handicap with ease.
In the scratch category Iain Rae (Dalbeattie) recovered from dropping four shots in the first two holes to post a score of 78. Mitchell Cowie (D&C) played very steadily for his 77 and Taylor Kerr (Sanquhar), despite leaking five shots in the first two holes, played the last sixteen holes in 63 for a very good 76. Angus Bendall (Castle Douglas) played most consistently of all for his 72 and deservedly won the scratch prize.
In the handicap section all the youngsters acquitted themselves well and returned their cards. Charlie Maxwell (Lochmaben) played very consistently for his nett 67 (94 – 27) and could be a star of the future. Ciaran Howat (D&C), who has played for the South U16 team, showed his continued improvement, to post a 68 (80 – 12). Russell Corrie (Lochmaben) was third with 74 (96 – 22) on the better inward half from Russell Kingsley (Lochmaben) 74 (90 – 16).
