Scottish Golf Limited, the company formed by the amalgamation of the Scottish Golf Union and Scottish Ladies Golfing Association on 1 October 2015, elected its first President at the AGM on Sunday 6 March 2016.
Jim Burns, 57, a member of Stranraer Golf Club, has taken up the reins to help develop the strategy, augment the goodwill that exists between the two previous associations and lead the unified body into the modern era. This will be a massive challenge to unite the Gents and Ladies’ games and overturn the loss of Club membership throughout the country.
Jim was born and bred in Stranraer and took up the game of golf at an early age. He first played for “the South” as a Junior and played in the Scottish Boys Championship and represented the Scottish Schools. He then progressed to the Mens team and represented the Area in matches all over Scotland. To give something back to the game he loved he entered the administrative side and became Championship Secretary for the South of Scotland Golfers’ Association. He was Wigtownshire GA President in 1990, South President in 1996 and then took on the duties of Secretary before becoming the South Representative on the SGU. He is presently Secretary of Stranraer Golf Club, has a passion for Junior Coaching and was one of the first qualified PGA Level 2 Volunteer Coaches. He has served a long and protracted apprenticeship and gained a mountain of knowledge which will stand him in good stead for his busy year ahead.
The Association and all golfers in Dumfries and Galloway congratulate him on his well deserved appointment and wish him well for the next twelve months.
