Northern Counties Select v Yorkshire

This annual match was played at Catterick Golf Club, Yorkshire on Tuesday 15 April on a cool sunny day. The Select Team consisted of 4 boys at under 16 years of age, 4 at under 15 years of age and 4 at under 14 years of age from Cumbria, Northumberland, Durham and South of Scotland. The South of Scotland had one boy in each age group and they all played well and contributed to the overall winning result of 10½ games to 7½ games. The three boys, Chris Finnie (Lockerbie), Nathan Watson (Kirkcudbright) and Finlay Copeland (D&G) were up early and left Dumfries at 7.30am for the two and half hour drive to Catterick.
Both the older boys were still tired after the long journey and lost their morning foursomes but young Finlay, who was playing in his first representative fixture, showed no nerves and gained a halved match with some wonderful chipping and putting. In the singles matches after lunch Chris played to his potential winning by 2 and 1, Nathan fought back from 4 down after 12 holes to halve his game on the 18th green  against a strong Yorkshire player and Finlay showed his class by winning out in the country by 5 and 4. A wonderful debut for Finlay who will not forget his first visit to Yorkshire for a long time.
After an evening meal the boys set out for the long journey home with smiles on their faces to celebrate a very successful day by having a long lie on Wednesday.
