The South Boys Team did not play to their usual standards in the Dunfermline Building Society Scottish Boys Area Team Championhip on Sunday 9 June at Prestwick St. Cuthbert Golf Club. Conditions for this annual event were simply superb on the sun kissed par 71 layout with fast running fairways and firm fast greens.
The South team of Connor Syme (Dumfries and County), Duncan McNeill (Powfoot), Rory Brunton (Portpatrick), and Matthew McCulloch (Portpatrick) were first off in the morning foursomes at 7.30am. Having to rise at the ridiculously early time of 5.30 obviously upset their normal sleeping patterns and both pairings did not play to their potential with Connor Syme and Matthew McCulloch scoring 78 and Duncan McNeill and Rory Brunton finishing with a 79 to end up in 12th position from the 16 competing teams.
In the afternoon singles the boys played much better with Connor Syme firing a one under par score of 70, Matthew McCulloch a level par of 71, Duncan McNeill a 5 over par 76 and Rory Brunton a 7 over par 78 to finish in 5th place in the singles. But this was not enough to raise their position of 12th overall. The boys were bitterly disappointed with their morning scores but three of the team are eligible next year so the experience should stand them in good stead.
