NCF – South Juniors v Northumberland

The day of the match, Wednesday 26 July, against the Northumberland Juniors dawned wet and windy at Percywood Golf Club in Northumberland. The tree-lined parkland course, although wet and heavy underfoot, was very well presented for this Northern Counties Federation league match. The South had sent a very strong team with all the boys playing at the top of their game and confident of victory. A very strong westerly wind and very heavy rain tested the resolve of the South boys as the greenkeeping staff went on ahead with squeegees to ensure the match could take place.…

SOUTH AREA RESPONSE TO SGL DRAFT STRATEGY

The Executive of the South of Scotland Golfers’ Association is disappointed in the Draft Strategy document in that there is very little detail with important facts and figures omitted. To not include these is paramount to commercial blackmail. The Executive, with the approval of all the Clubs in the Area, organises an IMT Card scheme whereby Members of local Clubs purchase a booklet containing cards which permits the member to play any course within the Area at half price. This can provide income for the Association of up to £2,000 per annum and is ring fenced for…

FRASER SHIELD – 3 COUNTIES

On a sunny but blustery day on Thursday 27 July three 6 man teams of Junior golfers representing Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire played in their annual match over Kirkcudbright Golf Course. The course was in immaculate condition and very well presented for this friendly but intense confrontation between the respective Counties. Wigtownshire arrived with a very young team with many playing their first representative match and found the prospect of playing against the older boys from Dumfriesshire and Kirkcudbrightshire rather daunting. They all played well on a course they were playing for the first time and never…

SOUTH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The premier event in the South Junior calendar took place on Thursday 13 July at Wigtownshire County Golf Club. William Squires (Kirkcudbright) set the morning standard with a magnificent level par round of 70. One over par for his first nine holes he started the…

2017 OOM UPDATE 1

Competition for the top of the leaderboard really took a massive step forward following the results of the Sutherland Chalice on Sunday 9 July at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club. Chris Corbet (D&G) won with a birdie at the first extra hole after a tie on 142 with David Brodie (Newton Stewart) and Dylan Cairnie (D&C). This moved Chris up from 6th position to second behind the ever-young Michael Grunwell (D&G) who retained the lead, but only just.
