On Saturday 23 July 2016, South Juniors entertained Northumberland Juniors to a Northern Counties Federation league match at Southerness Golf Club. With the course in immaculate condition and the dull, windless weather conditions everything was set for some wonderful golf by two evenly matched teams. This annual stroke play team competition between the three counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire took place at Kirkcudbright Golf Club on Thursday 21 July 2016. The weather was sunny intervals and the course was in perfect condition  The teams consisted of 6 players from each County with 4 scores to count. Despite the perfect golfing conditions only 5 players had a scratch score of under 80 which was disappointing considering the golfing talent on show. The South Junior team travelled to Seascale on Tuesday 19 July to play the return match in the Northern Counties League looking for revenge for their earlier defeat at Kirkcudbright. The links course was in excellent condition and the weather forecast was for the warmest day of the year so far The boy’s golf bags were bursting with the number of bottles of water and other liquids to keep the possibility of hydration at bay. The top eight players in the Stroke Play Championship gathered again at Kirkcudbright Golf Club on Wednesday 13 July to compete in the Match Play Championship. The weather this time was more favourable with sunny intervals and a brisk breeze coming off the sea and with the course in magnificent condition some good matches were expected. On a typical Scottish summer’s day which started overcast and misty, turned to rain for 3 hours over lunchtime then as the heavy clouds rolled away the boys playing in the South Junior Championships experienced weak sunny intervals. Kirkcudbright Golf Course, which was in excellent condition, played host to fourteen boys – a very poor turnout in quantity but not as it was to turn out, in quality. David Brodie (Wigtown & Bladnoch) has got off to a flying start winning Wigtownshire County Stroke Play and Match Play Championships, the JAL Brown Trophy at Portpatrick and being the top local player in the Southerness Challenge.
