Portpatrick (Dunskey) Golf Club played host to the Shamash Trophy on Sunday 21 April. The course was in excellent condition on a lovely spring day after early rain. It is with regret the Executive has to report the death of Tom Bartlett. Tom was the President of the Association in 2006 and served on the Executive for many years as the Coaching Convenor and latterly as the Development Officer procuring much needed finance for Junior coaching. As Coaching Convenor he formulated a policy that engaged the services of professionals, including golfers, mental performance and fitness. The annual friendly match was played at Peebles Golf Club on Sunday 14 April in atrocious weather. Strong winds and driving rain caused a lot of surface water on the course prompting the officials to reduce the match to singles only. The result was a win for South by 7 games to 3. On Wednesday 10 April 3 boys from the South of Scotland played for the Northern Counties Select U16's against Yorkshire U16's at Saltburn on a cold, bright and windless day. Duncan McNeill (Powfoot) captained the combined team and played in the first couple in the foursomes with Alex Chalk (D&G). They won a hard fought battle on the last green when the Yorkshire boys missed a 3 foot putt. The annual match between South and Cumbria for the Solway Trophy took place on Sunday 31 March in freezing cold conditions with a breeze from the east making it feel even colder. The course was in good condition despite a lack of growth and a credit to the greenkeeping staff. The result was a convincing win for the visitors by eleven and a half matches to six and a half.
